Edinburgh and the year of 2012

In 2012, the eyes of the world turn to Great Britain as we celebrate the best in sporting and creative talent from around the globe. 2012 will kick off in high style with Edinburgh's Hogmanay, which will herald in both the year the Olympic Games comes to Britain, and the year of Creative Scotland.

Edinburgh's Hogmanay will begin with the customary world-class celebrations including the Keilidh, Concert in the Gardens (featuring Primal Scream as the 2011/2012 headliner) and the (in-)famous Loony Dook, when the good and brave among the Hogmanay revellers have the chance to brace themselves against the icy waters of Edinburgh's Firth of Forth.

Edinburgh's Hogmanay will also shortly be announcing a special event linked to the cultural programme of the 2012 Olympic Games.

From the invigorating start to the year, 2012 will showcase the best that the world has to offer on Edinburgh's doorstep.

NVA's Speed of Light, in collaboration with the Edinburgh International Festival, will see Edinburgh's iconic Arthur's Seat illuminated by choreographed runners in light emitting suits, turning the rugged mountain landscape into an artistic playground as part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Lovers of the classics can also see two Edinburgh International Festival productions as part of the World Shakespeare Festival.

Acclaimed director Grzegorz Jarzyna’s production of Macbeth, set in a contemporary and brutal middle-eastern conflict, is unflinching in its depiction of the machine of violence. It is a moving exploration of the nature of conflict and morality. The second production is Dmitry Krymov’s new interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Dmitry Krymov is a director, artist and designer whose visually stunning productions have
established him as one of the most original directorial voices of his generation.

The Year of Creative Scotland draws a closer eye on all of Scotland's many creative enterprises, not least of which is the Edinburgh Festivals, 12 year round festivals which colletively draw more than 4 million attendees to the city.

So if you are heading to Britain to catch the Olympics, looking to get out of London, or simply curious, why not head to Edinburgh to see the peak of what 2012 has to offer?
