BEYOND HILLSBOROUGH
Looking for an early show at the Fringe and being mildly curious to see another offering about the Hillsborough disaster, I entered the Quaker Meeting House Theatre. During the hour long drama I was pleased to see that the young cast were not selling you a tabloid experience however as time went on I couldn’t help feeling there was an element of originality lacking in the portrayal. There were transcripts and recollections but alas nothing new in terms of angle of coverage or artistic presentation. Also I did keep having flashbacks of the Jimmy McGovern production that I suspect may pre date the memory of some of the actors.
As a Liverpool supporter at the time of that dreadful event I am fully behind the raised awareness that Beyond Hillsborough provides and full marks deserved for that. Regretfully on this level of platform it will be judged for content and originality. In my opinion I have to say to say that dedicating the whole play to such an adventurous undertaking was bravery to the extreme and provided disappointingly minimal contrast. There were some notable personal performances but in terms of originality (even to the point of being one of ten Fringe shows tagged as ‘Beyond’) I would have to say that sadly the result did not live up to expectation.
