From 29 DECEMBER 2009 until 2 JANUARY 2010 this year’s expanded 5-day EDINBURGH’S HOGMANAY programme features music, dance, art, conversation, fireworks, street theatre, light and fire.  Brand new events programmes as well as popular favourites, will bring Edinburgh’s streets alive with non-stop enjoyment for both residents and visitors to Scotland’s capital city.

Highlights of this year’s festival include brand new events programmes conceived for the 30th December 2009 - NIGHT AFORE LIGHT NIGHT -and 1st January 2010 - RE:FORMATION DAY.  NIGHT AFORE LIGHT NIGHT features an array of extraordinary activities based around fire and light talking place along Edinburgh’s Royal Mile including a rare opportunity to experience some of Edinburgh’s most famous attractions - Edinburgh Castle, St Giles Cathedral, Mary King’s Close, Whisky Heritage Centre & John Knox House - like never before when they open for one night only.  The Royal Mile itself will be transformed into a breathtaking spectacle of fire and light on both 30th December and 1st January as internationally acclaimed light and fire installation and performance artists CARABOSSE present their Scottish Premiere, FIRELIGHT.

Meanwhile, the UK’s top selling DJ, CALVIN HARRIS’s exclusive club night, THE NIGHT AFORE PARTY takes place at the HMV Picture House.  His current album Ready for the Weekend, which went to Number 1, includes singles I’m Not Alone and Ready for the Weekend.   His latest single from the album, Flashback, is currently in the top 10.  He has worked with Kylie and Madonna and his track with Dizee Rascal, Dance Wiv Me, was NME’s Dance Floor Filler of 2009.

New Year’s Day offers a new events programme entitled RE:FORMATION DAY reflecting themes of reform and renewal of the mind, the body and the spirit.  Lively debate kick starting the 450th anniversary of the Reformation in Scotland is led by Harry Reid and Richard Halloway and chaired by Catherine Lockerbie as part of the re-instated A NEW YEAR’S CONVERSATION at the superb Signet Library and is complimented by GATE OF THE YEAR - an inspirational hour of music poetry and words of reflection and contemplation at St Giles Cathedral. 

Meanwhile, NEW MUSIC AT THE PALACE presents young, contemporary musicians working in the crossover between folk and jazz, celtic and world music at Holyrood Palace Mews and for the first time, the Big Man comes to Edinburgh. Attracting massive crowds as he walked throughout Scotland this autumn, Big Man is reawakened to walk the capital’s Royal Mile from Holyrood to the Tron.

Over the five days of the Festival OFF KILTER, a new music and dance spectacular, including world premieres from choreographers Mark Morris and Ashley Page, explodes onto the stage of Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre for six performances.

On the 31st December the legendary Edinburgh’s Hogmanay STREET PARTY is headlined by rabble rousing The Enemy performing alongside an unmissable mix of top rated artists from indie/rock, cheesey disco pop and DJ sets (featuring headliner MyloRichard Colburn of Belle and Sebastian and Gary & Tom of Snow Patrol) across three electrifying music stages.  On the same night, CONCERT IN THE GARDENS headliners Madness are joined by very special guests, the UK’s pop sensation of the year Noisettes and Codeine Velvet Club - the new venture for Fratellis front man Jon Lawler - for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay flagship music and fireworks spectacular.

All this on top of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay family favourites THE TORCHLIGHT PROCESSION (including this year’s son et lumiere finale) and the CANDLELIT CONCERT at St Giles CathedralTHE KEILIDH featuring the best in Scottish traditional music and headlining DJ set from MYLO at the OFFICIAL EDINBURGH’S HOGMANAY AFTER SHOW PARTY means Edinburgh is set to host the best five day New Year’s Party in the World.

The opening event of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 2010 is the spectacular Torchlight Procession. Join thousands of torch carriers as they create a river of fire from the historic Royal Mile to the Son et Lumiére and fireworks finale on Calton Hill.

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is proud to present internationally renowned street theatre artists Carabosse with their magical fire installations. Carabosse light up cities around the world, their Scottish premiere will transform the Royal Mile into a breathtaking hub of fire and light.

A festive celebration in the atmospheric surroundings of St Giles’ Cathedral. This year’s concert marks the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death with his celebratory Coronation Anthems, including Zadok the Priest. This feast of Baroque music also includes J.S.Bach’s Magnificat in D and Alessandro Scarlatti’s Cantata Pastorale. St Giles’ Cathedral Choir, directed by Michael Harris, with the St Giles’ Camerata leader Angus Ramsay, are joined by a stunning array of young soloists.

Harry Reid, author of the recently published and widely acclaimed “Reformation: the Dangerous Birth of the Modern World” and Richard Holloway, formerly the Bishop of Edinburgh, talk about what the Reformation meant then and means now. 500 years on, are John Calvin (b 1509) and John Knox (b 1510) – arguably the most influential figures in shaping the Scottish psyche – the good guys or the bad guys? The Conversation in the superb Upper Library is chaired by Catherine Lockerbie, former Director of the Edinburgh International Book Festival. This event is part of Edinburgh’s Lectures “Making Scotland” series.
