The Voyage Starts Here
28/03/2011
Spring is a time for youth, growth and vitality, and nowhere is this more apparent than in Edinburgh where children and young people are annually treated to their very own festival of international theatre. The Bank of Scotland Imaginate Festival runs from the 9th -15th May at venues across the city, and the 2011 line-up includes a perfect blend of classic and contemporary theatre, sure to capture the imagination of both young and old alike.
The programme is full of exciting shows that children of all ages are sure to love. There’s Potato Needs a Bath, a musical puppet show featuring a variety of vegetables, aimed at 3-5 year olds. For fans of the classics, the 40th anniversary of Mr Benn sees this show staged in style by the Tall Stories theatre company. Other highlights include Is This a Dagger? The Story of Macbeth, which takes a close look at that famous Scottish king and creates an intriguing blend of fact and fiction. The Golden Goose, a German fairytale, will be told around a table where the audience sits alongside the actors. White is a story of an entirely white world into which colour slowly appears with interesting effects.
The Imaginate Festival attracts skilled performers from around the world to join with the impressive local core. Guests this May hail from a wide range of countries, including Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Canada, and will all combine to help celebrate the festival’s 22nd birthday in style.
Tony Reekie, Festival Director said: ‘Scottish children's theatre has truly come of age, standing alongside the very best the world has to offer. And the productions we can offer are genuinely for all children now, with a strong programme of quality productions for the very young. We are particularly pleased that over 50% of our programme is home grown, offering our audience the chance to celebrate the work being created in our own country.’
